How you spend your retirement years could be greatly affected by the success of your super fund. So, it makes sense that you should have input on where your retirement savings are accrued.

Am I eligible for super as an employee?

In Australia, if an employee earns at least $450 before tax in a calendar month, their employer must make super guarantee contributions - regardless of whether they are employed full-time or part-time.

The super guarantee is the minimum amount payable by an employer, calculated as a percentage of an employee's earnings. It is currently 9.5% of an employee’s ordinary time earnings, and is scheduled to gradually increase in the coming years.

Employers must pay their employees' super entitlements at least quarterly, in line with due dates specified by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), into a complying super fund.

Do I have to use my employer's super fund?

Before you accept the default fund provided by your employer, it's important to consider whether you have a choice in the matter. And in most cases, you will.

As stated on the ATO website, "a new employee is eligible to choose their super fund if they are:

  • employed under a federal award;
  • employed under a former state award, now known as a notional agreement preserving State award (NAPSA);
  • employed under an award or industrial agreement that does not require super contributions;
  • employed under an enterprise agreement or workplace determination made on or after 1 January 2021, or;
  • not employed under any state award or industrial agreement (including contractors who are regarded as eligible employees for super purposes)."

If your employment fits any of these descriptions, your employer is obliged to give you the option to choose your own superannuation fund.

The only two instances in which an employer is not required to give an employee a choice is if the employee:

  1. has a superannuation fund that undergoes a merger or acquisition, and/or;
  2. is on a temporary working visa.

However, if you do fall into either of these two categories, you still have the right to request a standard choice form from your employer.

What happens if I don't choose my own super fund?

In order for your employer to fulfil their requirements of the superannuation guarantee, you must have a fund into which they can make the compulsory quarterly payments.

So, if you fail to select your own super fund, your employer will sign you up to their default fund so that they are able to meet their super obligations.

Employers are restricted to nominating a fund that is recognised as a MySuper fund, which is a government initiative "aimed at providing a simple, cost-effective, balanced product for the vast majority of Australian workers who are invested in the default option of their current fund".

If you are employed by a large company, they may have their own corporate super fund.

According to MoneySmart, "some large companies operate a corporate fund under a board of trustees who they appoint. Other corporate funds are operated by a retail or industry fund, but are only available to that company's employees".

How can I find the best super fund?

Just like savings accounts, credit cards and other kinds of financial products, different super funds offer a range of different features and benefits, providing employees with the opportunity to find the fund that's best suited to their needs.

That's why it's important to search and compare super funds, instead of simply settling for your employer's nominated fund.

When comparing super funds, consider the following questions:

  • What type of super fund is it?
  • How has it performed in the past?
  • What fees does it charge?
  • What kind of insurance, if any, does it offer?
  • What investment options are available?
  • Does it offer any additional services?

Can I make my extra super contributions?

In addition to the employer contributions your super fund receives, you may be eligible to make extra super payments either from your pre-tax or after-tax income.

Pre-tax super contributions, often referred to as salary sacrifice, can be paid out of your pre-tax income by your employer, at your request.

Your employer's super guarantee contributions and any additional pre-tax contributions make up your concessional contributions. 

After-tax super contributions are non-concessional contributions, as you will have already paid tax on this money.

Both concessional and non-concessional contributions are capped at a certain amount per financial year. Eligibility is generally determined based on your super fund account balance, age and other factors.

How much extra superannuation can I add to my fund?

There is an annual limit of $25,000 for concessional contributions – that is, money paid by your employer and extra money you pay into your account through salary sacrificing. There is also a limit on non-concessional contributions. Australians aged between 65 and 74 have a limit of $100,000 per year. Australians aged under 65 have a limit of $300,000 every three years.

What is salary sacrificing?

A salary sacrifice is where your employer takes part of your pre-tax salary and pays it directly into your superannuation account. Salary sacrifices come out of your pre-tax income, whereas personal contributions come out of your after-tax income.

What are concessional contributions?

Concessional contributions are pre-tax payments into your superannuation account. The payments made by your employer are concessional payments. You can also make concessional contributions with a salary sacrifice.

How do I change my superannuation fund?

Changing superannuation funds is a common and straightforward process. You can do it through your MyGov account or by filling out a rollover form and sending it to your new fund. You’ll also have to provide proof of identity.

What are the age pension's residence rules?

On the day you claim the age pension, you must be in Australia and you must have been an Australian resident for at least 10 years (with no break in your stay for at least five of those years). The following exceptions apply:

  • You’re exempt from the 10-year rule if you’re a refugee or former refugee
  • You’re exempt from the 10-year rule if you’re getting Partner Allowance, Widow Allowance or Widow B pension
  • You can claim the age pension with only two years of residency if you’re a woman whose partner died while you were both Australian residents

The value of your assets affects whether you can qualify for the age pension – and, if so, how much.

The following assets are exempt from the assets test:

  • any property or money left to you in an estate, which you can’t get for up to 12 months

What is superannuation?

Superannuation is money set aside for your retirement. This money is automatically paid into your superannuation fund by your employer.

How does superannuation affect the age pension?

Most Australians who are of retirement age can qualify for the age pension. However, depending on the size of your assets and post-retirement income, you might be entitled to only a reduced pension. In some instances, you might not be entitled to any pension payments.

When is superannuation payable?

Employers must pay superannuation at least four times per year. The due dates are 28 January, 28 April, 28 July and 28 October.

Is superannuation taxed?

Superannuation is taxed. It is generally taxed at 15 per cent. However, if you earn less than $37,000, you will be automatically reimbursed up to $500 of the tax you paid. Also, if your income plus concessional superannuation contributions exceed $250,000, you will also be charged Division 293 tax. This is an extra 15 per cent tax on your concessional contributions or the amount above $250,000 – whichever is lesser.

Is superannuation compulsory?

Superannuation is compulsory. Generally speaking, it can’t be touched until you’re at least 55 years old.

How do you find lost superannuation funds?

Lost superannuation refers to savings in an account that you’ve forgotten about. This can happen if you’ve opened several different accounts over the years while moving from job to job.

You can use your MyGov account to see details of all your superannuation accounts, including any you might have forgotten. Alternatively, you can fill in a ‘Searching for lost super’ form and send it to the Australian Taxation Office, which will then search on your behalf.

How do I combine several superannuation accounts into one account?

The process used to consolidate several superannuation accounts into one is the same process used to change superannuation funds. This can be done through your MyGov account or by filling out a rollover form and sending it to your chosen fund.

What fees do superannuation funds charge?

Superannuation funds can charge a range of fees, including:

  • Activity-based fees – for specific, irregular services, such as splitting an account after a divorce
  • Administration fees – to cover the cost of managing your account

How do you create a superannuation account?

Assuming you are able to choose your own fund, the next step should be research, because there are more than 200 different superannuation funds in Australia.

What is MySuper?

MySuper accounts are basic, low-fee accounts. If you don’t nominate a superannuation fund, your employer must choose one for you that offers a MySuper account.

MySuper accounts offer two investment options:

  1. Single diversified investment strategy

Your fund assigns you a risk strategy and investment profile, which remain unchanged throughout your working life.

  1. Lifecycle investment strategy

Your fund assigns you an investment strategy based on your age, and then changes it as you get older. Younger workers are given strategies that emphasise growth assets

What contributions can SMSFs accept?

SMSFs can accept mandated employer contributions from an employer at any time (Funds need an electronic service address to receive the contributions).

However, SMSFs can’t accept contributions from members who don’t have tax file numbers.

Also, they generally can’t accept assets as contributions from members and they generally can’t accept non-mandated contributions for members who are 75 or older.
